The Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia
The Carpenter’s Company has a close connection with the Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia.
Formed in 1724, this is the oldest existing craft guild in North America. The Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia has some 150 men and women as members, all of whom are prominent architects, building contractors or structural engineers. Its aims include providing encouragement, education, and support for men and women entering the construction industry.
The Carpenters’ Company and the Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia have very similar coats of arms, suggesting an early link between the companies.
Carpenters’ Hall, Philadelphia
Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia has been continuously owned and operated by the Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia since 1770. The seeds of American independence were sown here at the First Continental Congress meeting held in 1774. Now part of the Independence National Historical Park, the Hall is open to the public and receives thousands of visitors each year.
