Wood Awards 2017 Shortlist Announced
Twenty structures and fourteen product designs have been selected for the Wood Awards 2017 shortlist. Established in 1971, the Wood Awards is the UK’s premier competition for excellence in architecture and product design in the world’s only naturally sustainable material. The Awards are free to enter and aim to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation using wood. The shortlist will be showcased at the London Design Fair (Stand B05, Hall T2), Old Truman Brewery, 21st-24th September.
The Buildings judging panel, led by Junior Warden Michael Morrison, reviewed applications in a variety of categories; Commercial & Leisure, Education & Public Sector, Interiors, Private, and Small Projects. Shortlisted projects range from a large-scale laboratory by Fairhursts Design Group to a residential staircase by Hassan Nourbakhsh and Blue Engineering. The elite independent judging panel will visit each shortlisted project in person making it as rigorous a competition as possible.
Within the Furniture & Product competition the judges have selected four bespoke pieces, four production-made and six student designs. The judging panel, led by design curator and author Max Fraser, will review all the shortlisted projects at the London Design Fair. The shortlist includes projects by Gareth Neal, Eleanor Lakelin, Ercol and Case. Voting for the public’s favourite student designer project will take place at the London Design Fair, the category this year involves students from the Building Crafts College, Central Saint Martins, Nottingham Trent University, Rycotewood Furniture Centre and Williams & Cleal.
The winners will be revealed at the annual Wood Awards ceremony at Carpenters’ Hall on 21st November, by ceremony host Johanna Agerman Ross, Founder of Disegno magazine and Curator of Twentieth Century and Contemporary Furniture and Product Design at the V&A.
