Wood Awards 2018 shortlist
Look! Look! Look! by Studio Morison
Twenty buildings and twelve furniture and products projects have been shortlisted for the Wood Awards 2018. Established in 1971, the Wood Awards is the UK’s premier competition for excellence in architecture and product design in the world’s only naturally sustainable material. The Awards are free to enter and aim to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation using wood. The shortlist were showcased at the London Design Fair, Old Truman Brewery, 20th – 23rd September.
The furniture and product panel is led by design critic, curator and journalist Corinne Julius. The panel includes Oliver Stratford, editor of Disegno magazine; Russell Pinch of Pinch Design; Eleanor Lakelin, maker and winner of the 2017 Bespoke category; Katie Walker of Katie Walker Furniture; and Rod Wales of Wales & Wales.
The furniture and product judges have selected four bespoke pieces, four production-made and four student designs. The shortlist includes projects by Sebastian Cox, Peter Marigold, John Makepeace and Foster + Partners. Within the Student Designer category there are two cash prizes: £1,000 for Winner and £500 for People’s Choice. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will take place at the London Design Fair. We are delighted that three of the four the nominees within the Student category are from the Building Crafts College.
The buildings judging panel is led by liveryman and three-time Gold Award winner Stephen Corbett of Green Oak Carpentry. The panel includes Andrew Lawrence, Arup; liveryman Jim Greaves; Hopkins; Adam Richards, Adam Richards Architects; Kirsten Haggart, Waugh Thistleton Architects; Nathan Wheatley, engenuiti; David Morley, David Morley Architects; and architectural journalist Ruth Slavid.
The Buildings judging panel reviewed applications in a variety of categories: Commercial & Leisure, Education & Public Sector, Interiors, Private, and Small Projects. Shortlisted projects include a pink pavilion sat in the centre of an 18th century walled garden by Studio Morison, a malt whiskey distillery by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and a new 6-lane school swimming pool by Hawkins Brown. The elite independent judging panel will visit each shortlisted project in person, making it as rigorous a competition as possible.
The winners will be revealed at the annual Wood Awards ceremony at Carpenters’ Hall on 20th November.
